Anticipation & Gifting

A few months ago, I remarked to one of my daughters that the worst part of a stomach virus is the anticipation of…well, you know. :)

Many of us have children, or ourselves, who live on the adrenaline rush of a more positive type of anticipation during varied times of the year…the anticipation associated with gift-giving and receiving. We give or receive gifts at varied times each year–birthdays, Christmas, Valentine’s, and sometimes just because. I like to give gifts (one reason is because gifts are one of my love languages), and therefore, I find myself anticipating reactions of joy from loved ones when they open certain well-chosen gifts.

My dear, wonderful husband does not really give gifts. I used to live on the anticipation of what he might get for me, yet I found myself often let down as he didn’t really get me a gift. Now, for me, the gift doesn’t have to be expensive, or even super-meaningful–in fact, I’ve often been overjoyed with a simple, heart-felt letter of gratitude or thoughts of love–but I admit, I like to receive (and give) gifts. So, for my birthday a few years ago, I ordered my own gifts from Amazon and let my children pick out of the box what they would give me…but there was no anticipation.

This past year, for Christmas, I did much the same thing; I purchased a few items for myself to put under the tree. Anyone who knows me knows that these gifts were practical more than frivolous, and bargains more than spendy. I have learned that I do need a little something “under the tree” to feel appreciated on Christmas…with or without anticipation.

But–this last week, my husband–of his own accord, I might add–came through with Valentine surprises for our little ones and for me. Because I wasn’t expecting anything, I had no anticipation…but the elation of his simple act of giving something to us brought me so much happiness I think I was walking on clouds for days…!

So, what is important to you? Anticipation? Gift-giving? Receiving? I’d love to hear your thoughts!
