Okay, so I had a little bit of fun with my title today, but I wanted to bring home the point that a little change in your perspective can go a long way…!

For one of my children’s recent birthdays, the child’s only request was that we be “outside.”  Since the weather is beautiful right now, we decided to hike a nearby nature trail that we had never visited.  We bounced out of the truck with water bottles in hands and a jogging stroller behind us.  As we strolled through the scenery, surprised by cool trees, birds, and even a few cacti, we enjoyed the beauty of the world around us.

Then, we began to get tired.  The inital excitement wore off, and each of us took our turn moaning, wailing, and wondering when the trial–I mean trail–would end.  I started to look down as I trudged through the sand–one foot after the other–and with each step, I felt a new level of fatigue.  As I stared at the trail, I realized that each motion and effort was yielding little success as I kicked around sand  and wondered when I would be back in a place where I could sit and rest.

At the moment when I was about to sink into the sand around me, I started to look around, to look up again at the beauties of nature.  I saw the palms, felt the breeze on my face, and smiled at the warm sun on my skin that had been there all the while.  All I had to do was change my perspective.

Are you getting caught up in your footsteps sinking in sand or looking around at the multitude of blessings in your life?  I vacillate…but I am working to find life’s beauties and increase my view.  Don’t we see clearer when we look farther?

A speaker at a recent church meeting shared these words:  “Sorrow looks back; Worry looks around; Faith looks up.”  Where is your perspective?
